The goddess standing inside the name was worshipped far past Egypt, and her cult reached Greek and Roman cities before Christianity absorbed or displaced it. By late antiquity the name had left the temple behind and belonged to Christians. One bearer was Isidora, a fourth-century nun at the Tabennisi monastery in Egypt, remembered for taking on the lowliest chores and feigning foolishness so that no one would praise her. Her feast falls on the first of May.
In a Polish class register today, Izydora sits oddly among the Annas and Marias of the roll. A girl given it holds, once translated, a very old phrase: dar Izydy, gift of Isis.
