What Kryspin means

Where Kryspin comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Kryspin comes from the Latin Crispinus, a family name built on the adjective crispus, meaning curly-haired. So the name began as a plain description: someone with curls. The Polish gloss keeps that sense exactly, kędzierzawy.

The best known bearer is Saint Crispin, a Roman martyr who, with his brother Crispinian, became the patron of shoemakers and leatherworkers. His feast falls on the 25th of October. That date carries a second fame. In 1415 the English won the Battle of Agincourt on Saint Crispin's Day, and Shakespeare later gave Henry V a speech that made the name famous in English.

In Poland the name stays rare. A boy named Kryspin might be the only one on his class register at school. His imieniny land in autumn, near the cobblers' saint.

The root has not changed. Kryspin still means curly-haired.
