What Konstantyn means

Where Konstantyn comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Konstantyn comes out of the Greek-speaking East, from Byzantium, where the emperor Constantine carried the name across an empire. Its Polish sense, stały, niezłomny, lands in English as constant and steadfast, and it stayed close to the name early on.

Polish keeps several forms. Konstanty is the one you meet most on official papers, and Konstantine survives as a variant nearer the older spelling. Friends shorten it to Kostek. The feminine Konstancja stands beside them all, drawn from the same root and keeping the same sense of steadfastness.

On a school register the name sits full and formal, while the boy answering to it is plainly Kostek by the second week. His imieniny falls on a saint's day, and the card left on his desk still reads Konstantyn, steadfast.
