Konstancja comes from Latin, from the noun constantia and the adjective constans, meaning constant and steadfast. The Romans used the word for a quality they admired, the ability to hold a position without wavering. It reached Polish through the Church calendar and the royal court, and it kept that plain sense of stałość, of standing firm under pressure.
Poland has a documented bearer in Konstancja Austriacka, the Habsburg archduchess who became queen as the second wife of Zygmunt III Waza. She was crowned in 1605, she raised a large family, and she left her name in the royal records. The masculine variants Konstantyn and Konstanty travel beside the feminine form. The diminutive Kostek trims the whole thing down for daily use.
