Jerzy

Jerzy comes down to Polish through Slavic forms, and its older sense points to the soil: an earthworker, a farmer, in Polish a rolnik. The variant Jurij and the everyday diminutive Jurek stay close beside it, the same name in a lighter coat. Jurij belongs more to the east, the same root worn by neighbours across the border.

On a class register in April, a boy named Jerzy shares his imieniny with Saint George, whose day falls on the twenty-third. The soldier-saint lent the name a knightly air, yet the plain meaning stayed farm-bound, someone who turns the earth.

For centuries Polish men have answered to it, statesmen and poets among them. Jurek does the daily work now. Under all of it sits the oldest sense, the rolnik, the one who works the ground.
