Jędrzej

An older spelling of Andrzej, from the Greek for "manly, brave". It's given less each year now and stays uncommon, so meeting a Jędrzej sticks in the memory: exclusively a man's name, most of them born in the 2010s.

What Jędrzej means

Where Jędrzej comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Jędrzej reaches back to the Greek Andreas, formed from andros, the word for "man." That root gave the Polish name its meaning, mężny and dzielny, manly and brave. For centuries Jędrzej was the ordinary spelling. Andrzej later took over in daily speech, yet the older form held on in parish books and village registers.

The name belongs to Saint Andrew the Apostle, patron of fishermen, whose feast falls on the thirtieth of November. That date fixes both the imieniny and Andrzejki, the old night of pouring wax to read a girl's future. A Jędrzej born today still keeps that name-day. Friends called him Jędrek.

Read a school register in Kraków and you will meet more than one Andrzej, and now and then the rarer Jędrzej, the same Greek "man" standing behind both.
