Meaning & Origin

What Jolanta means

Where Jolanta comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Jolanta grows from Slavic roots, and the meaning people repeat for it is "violet flower." Its diminutives soften it for daily use: Jola between friends, Jolka for a small girl. The older variant Jolenta stands closer to how the name looked centuries back.

The best documented bearer is Blessed Jolenta, born around 1244, a daughter of Béla IV of Hungary. She married Bolesław the Pious and lived as a duchess near Kalisz and Gniezno. She died in 1304. Rome approved her cult only in 1827, and her feast on 15 June became the name day that every Jolanta now shares.

Read a class register today and Jolanta can still appear among the newer names. On the imieniny in June, the short Jola does most of the greeting. The name means violet flower.
