Jaśmina

Jaśmina takes its name from the jasmine flower, and its path into Polish runs through Latin. Botanists fixed the plant under the genus name Jasminum, and from that Latin form the personal name grew. The short meaning stays plain: kwiat jaśminu, the jasmine flower.

Two variants keep it company. Jasmina drops the softening mark, and yasmina opens with a y, a spelling that travels easily across borders and languages. Look down a Polish class register and you may find more than one of them in the same year, each pointing back to the same white, heavily scented bloom.

The flower did the naming work here. Where a name like Katarzyna picked up the sense of "pure" long after its origin, Jaśmina keeps its meaning where it started, in the plant itself. That plainness is part of why it reads as clear rather than ornate. To carry it is to carry a small piece of botanical Latin, softened by Polish sound into jaśmin. Say the three forms and the root holds: jaśmina, jasmina, yasmina, all of them kwiat jaśminu.
