Ida

Ida comes from a Germanic root, id, tied to work and labour, and this is where its short meaning settles: industrious, hardworking. The name is brief. Two syllables make a claim about effort rather than beauty or rank, and speakers across German lands used it long before it reached Polish registers.

History gives Ida real bearers. Ida of Boulogne, an eleventh-century noblewoman later venerated as a saint, was mother to Godfrey of Bouillon. Centuries afterward Tennyson made an Ida the heroine of his poem The Princess, a woman who founds a college for other women. The name kept turning up in books and in church calendars alike.

In Poland the imieniny for Ida fall on the thirteenth of April. A teacher reading it from a class register meets a name that is compact and plain to spell, with no diminutive expected and no variant crowding around it. It asks for little. What it offers instead is that old sense of labour, the meaning pracowita in Polish, the idea that a person named this way is built for work.
