Herbert

Herbert reaches back to the old Germanic tongue, built from hari, meaning army, and beraht, meaning bright. Together they read as bright army, the meaning the name still holds. The same beraht surfaces in Albert and in Robert, so Herbert keeps good company.

The name traveled well. German speakers kept it steady for centuries, and English speakers took it up too, which is how Herbert Hoover, the thirty-first American president, came to wear it. In German lands it belonged to bishops and craftsmen alike.

Short, isn't it. On a Polish class register Herbert stands out now, less common than it once was. The Polish gloss reads sławny wojownik, a famous warrior, a reading that leans on the army half and lends the bright half a martial shine. That warrior sense grew up around the name later.
