Hiacynta comes from Greek. Behind it stands Hyakinthos, the name Greek speakers gave to a spring flower and, in their myth, to a youth beloved of Apollo. The story runs that the bloom sprang from the fallen boy and took his name, and the plant has kept that name ever since.
The meaning is a flower. In English we call it the hyacinth; in Polish, kwiat hiacynt. There is no grand claim buried in the word, only the plant itself, dense with small blossoms crowded on a single stalk.
