Hiacynta comes from Greek. Behind it stands Hyakinthos, the name Greek speakers gave to a spring flower and, in their myth, to a youth beloved of Apollo. The story runs that the bloom sprang from the fallen boy and took his name, and the plant has kept that name ever since.
