Gustaw

Gustaw grows from Germanic roots. One part points to the Geats, a people of what is now southern Sweden, and the other to a word for a staff or support. Read together, the name means the staff of the Geats, a prop the tribe could lean on. The same building blocks travelled north and gave Scandinavia its long line of kings called Gustav.

In Poland the name found a literary anchor. Adam Mickiewicz handed it to the anguished lover of Dziady, part IV, the Gustaw who later sheds that self and becomes Konrad. Polish teenagers still meet him on the syllabus. Alongside the masculine form sits Gustawa, its cross-gender counterpart, rarer now but written into old parish registers.

Its name-day falls on 2 August.

Picture a boy named Gustaw answering to the teacher during roll call, his name sitting between shorter, trendier ones in the register. He answers to something with a documented past.
