What Emmanuel means

Where Emmanuel comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Emmanuel comes from Hebrew, from the words Immanu'el, which mean "God is with us." The prophet Isaiah set it down first, in a verse promising a child by that name (Isaiah 7:14). The Gospel of Matthew later quoted the same line, and the name moved out across Christian Europe from there.

France took to it warmly. The variant Emanuel travels beside it on official forms, and a daughter can carry the feminine Emanuela. On a Polish class register the name reads formal, a little grand, sitting among the Jakubs and Piotrs.

The sense "God is with us" never faded into decoration. It stayed the plain reading of the name, close to the Hebrew it grew from. Whoever answers to Emmanuel answers, in effect, to a short sentence: bóg z nami.
