Meaning & Origin

What Elizabeth means

Where Elizabeth comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Elizabeth comes from the Hebrew Elisheva, and the old sense holds firm: my god is an oath. A vow given a name. The English-speaking world made the name its own through Elizabeth I, who ruled for forty-four years and lent her name to a whole age of writing.

In Poland the same name settled into Elżbieta, with Ela and Elka as the everyday forms a child answers to. Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, a princess remembered for giving her bread to the poor, kept the name in Catholic calendars, and her feast still marks an imieniny in November.

Say the diminutive Ela in a school register and no one thinks of Hebrew oaths. That distance is part of the story. A name can travel from a promise made to God to a girl raising her hand in class and lose none of its use along the way.

The meaning stays legible under all of it: bóg jest moją przysięgą, my god is an oath.
