Chloé begins in the Greek word Χλόη, the name for a first green shoot, the young plant that pushes up when winter breaks. The Greeks handed it to Demeter as an epithet, Demeter Chloe, who watched over the sprouting grain and the fields turning green again.
The name appears early in writing. Paul greets the household of Chloe in his first letter to the Corinthians, which makes her one of the oldest recorded bearers. She was the head of a household in a Greek-speaking port, a real woman Paul knew by name.
France took the name and kept it. Maurice Ravel finished his ballet Daphnis et Chloé in 1912. In 1952 Gaby Aghion founded her Paris fashion house and called it Chloé, and the accent on the final e has stayed French ever since.
The sense has barely moved in all that time. Chloé still means a green shoot, a young plant.
