What Cassandra means

Where Cassandra comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Cassandra begins in Greek, as Κασσάνδρα, the name of a Trojan princess. The old reading joins kekasmai, to shine or excel, with aner, man, giving a sense of shining upon or excelling over man. Apollo gave her the gift of true prophecy. Then he cursed her: no one would believe a word she said.

That double fate stayed with the name. A Cassandra sees clearly and speaks plainly, and the world argues back. The curse held. English writers kept the figure alive for centuries, and the name settled into English use.

It carries real history too. Cassandra Austen was the elder sister of Jane, her closest confidante, and the one who burned most of Jane's letters after her death.

Short and formal on a Polish document, the name means wyróżniająca się wśród ludzi. No standard Polish diminutive attaches to it. On a class register it stands alone, Greek from the first letter.
