Alek

Alek is a short name resting on a long Greek word. Behind it stands Aleksander, and behind that the Greek Alexandros, built from alexein, to defend or ward off, joined to andros, man. That is the source of the Polish gloss obrońca ludzi, defender of mankind.

The name travels in a large family. Aleksander is the full form, while Aleks, Olek, and Oleś are the everyday shortenings a boy answers to at home. A sister might be Aleksandra, the same root turned across gender.

On a class register in a Polish school, Alek reads clean and quick, three letters and then the surname. Teachers rarely stumble over it. The old Greek promise stays folded inside the name, obrońca ludzi, a defender of people carried by a boy who may be all of six.
