Alojzy

Alojzy came into Polish through the Latin Aloysius, a bookish rendering of an older name that carried the sense of "famous warrior." The Latin form gave it a formal, saintly air, the kind that suited church registers and calendars.

That "famous warrior" meaning reaches back past Latin to the roots that also produced Louis, where the parts meant loud fame and battle. In Poland the name settled with its own texture, and it lends itself to Alojza, the cross-gender form a daughter might carry.
