Adem

Adem is the Turkish form of Adam. The name goes back to Hebrew, where adam named the human being, man as a kind rather than one person. That word stands close to adamah, the tilled red ground. So the sense doubled: man and earth held in one short set of letters.

In the Quran, Adem is the first human, the same figure who opens Genesis. This is why the name runs through Turkish, Bosnian, and Albanian families, where it has stayed near that scripture. It travels light. No Polish diminutive has attached to it, so Adem keeps its plain three letters wherever it lands.

On a Polish class register, Adem now sits a line from Adam, the local form everyone recognises. The two are one name in different mouths. A teacher reading the list meets the Turkish spelling and the old meaning together: man, earth.
