Meaning & Origin

What Olimpia means

Where Olimpia comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Olimpia comes from Greek, and it points to a single place: Mount Olympus, the peak the ancients made home to their gods. The short meaning given in Polish is pochodząca z Olimpu, in English simply from Mount Olympus. So the name marks a person by the geography of the divine, someone belonging to the mountain rather than any single god upon it.

The oldest famous bearer is Olympias, mother of Alexander the Great, a Macedonian queen whose fierce loyalty to her son outlived her by centuries. Later the Church remembered a different Olympias, a wealthy deaconess of Constantinople who stayed faithful to John Chrysostom after his exile in 404. She died in 408, and Polish calendars keep her name-day for Olimpia on 17 December, alongside 25 July.

On a school register the name reads clearly. It has no standard Polish diminutive fixed to it. It stays whole. What holds constant is the root, Olympus, the mountain from which the whole name descends.
