Vladislav

Vladislav grows from two old Slavic roots. One means to rule, the other means glory. Bind them and you reach the meaning the name has held since the early Slavic world: to rule with glory.

The form spread east and became strongly Russian. A boy named Vladislav in Moscow or Kazan shares his name with rulers and generals, and Russians mark a name-day for it in the church calendar. The Polish cousin, Władysław, belongs to kings, including Władysław Jagiełło, who reigned at the turn of the fifteenth century. Same roots, different spelling.

There is no soft diminutive handed down with this name, no gentler side kept in reserve. It stands as it is. A child could carry it onto a class register and answer to "rule" and "glory" at once. The meaning was never a decoration added later; it sat in the roots from the start, in vlad and in slav.
