Miłosz

Miłosz grows from Slavic roots, from the element mił, meaning dear or beloved. It belongs to an old family of compound names such as Miłosław, where mił joins sław, glory, giving the reading "dear glory." Time wore the long form down to the short, warm Miłosz.

The variant Miloš travels south, common among Czechs and Serbs. Same seed, different soil.

In Polish the meaning sits close to the surface. Call a boy Miłosz and you name him umiłowany and miłujący, one who is loved and one who loves. On a school register the name is short enough to write fast and clear enough that nobody asks twice. The sense of "beloved" here is no later gloss. It is the root still doing its work, dear and plain.
