Marco

Marco is the Italian form of the Latin Marcus, and Marcus reaches back to Mars, the Roman god of war. The short meaning follows that root: dedicated to Mars, warlike. Roman families used the name widely, and over time it settled into Italian towns as Marco.

The most documented bearer is Marco Polo, the Venetian merchant whose account of his years in Asia reached readers across Europe. He traveled to the court of Kublai Khan in the thirteenth century, then came home with stories few believed. His name did not describe his trade; he dealt in goods rather than battles. Still, the martial origin stayed attached to the sound.
