Joel

Joel comes from Hebrew, where it joins two small words for the divine: yo, a form of Yahweh, and el, meaning God. Put together they say yahweh is god, a compact creed folded into one name. The Hebrew Bible gives it to a prophet whose short book sits among the twelve minor prophets, so Joel was written down very early.

English readers carried it forward. After the Reformation, Protestant families in England drew heavily on Old Testament names, and Joel moved with them into common use and then across the Atlantic.

The meaning has stayed close to the surface. Where some names lost their old sense, Joel still states what it states: pan jest bogiem, yahweh is god. On a Polish class register today it looks compact and modern, four letters that need no diminutive to soften them. That plainness is the point. A boy named Joel holds a complete Hebrew sentence, one that reads the same now as it did on the prophet's scroll.
