Eldar

Eldar reaches Polish name books with a Hebrew root and very little baggage around it. The gloss printed beside it is usually short: fiery warrior, in Polish ognisty wojownik. That sense of heat and battle is a reading laid over the name rather than lifted straight from its Hebrew parts, and it settled there over time, the way a strong word can attach itself to a sound people like.

The name is rare here. On a class register it would stand out among the Jakubs and Szymons, an entry the teacher checks twice before the first roll call. Said in Polish it stays firm and a little foreign, two syllables that refuse to soften.

There are no Polish diminutives worn into it, no El or Dar that the language has smoothed down through daily use. It comes as it is. A boy named Eldar carries the whole word every time, and behind that word sits the old meaning: fiery warrior.
