Wolfgang

Wolfgang comes from two old Germanic words: wolf, the animal, and gang, which meant a going or a path. Put together they give the short meaning that Polish renders as wilcza droga, the wolf path. The wolf was a beast the early Germanic peoples both feared and respected, and setting it beside the word for path made a name with a stride in it.

Real people have carried it for more than a thousand years. Wolfgang of Regensburg, the tenth-century bishop, became a saint whose feast still falls at the end of October. Centuries later Johann Wolfgang von Goethe signed it across his poems, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart carried the middle name into concert halls everywhere.

In Poland the name stays German. It never grew a Polish diminutive or variant to soften it, so a Wolfgang on a class register reads at once as a marker of German family or heritage. The name keeps its one blunt sense wherever it goes: wolf path.
