Luca

Luca comes from Latin, and its oldest thread runs back to Lucania, a region in the south of ancient Italy. To be called Lucanus meant to be a man from that country. The Latin word lux, meaning light, sits nearby, and across the centuries the name gathered a sense of brightness. That is the reading Polish speakers give it now: świetlisty, jasny. The tie to Lucania came first. The sense of light was fastened on later.

In Italy the name belongs above all to Saint Luke the evangelist, whose Latin form Lucas stands beside Luca. Painters and doctors claimed him as their patron, and the name spread across Catholic Europe on that devotion.

Luca grew no diminutive of its own. It stays short. On an official form at the urząd it arrives as a plain two syllables, unaltered, with nothing to trim off. What the name holds, under the Italian sound and the brightness, is that first fact of place: Luca, the one from Lucania.
