Lisa

Lisa reached Polish speakers through English, German, and Scandinavian use, where it settled as a short form of Elisabeth. The longer name carries the meaning recorded here as "god is my oath," in Polish "bóg jest moją przysięgą," and Lisa inherited it while shedding the extra syllables. For much of the twentieth century it lived only as a nickname. Then it became a full given name in its own right.

The most documented Lisa was born in Florence on 15 June 1479. Lisa Gherardini married a cloth merchant, raised several children, and sat for Leonardo da Vinci in the portrait now known as the Mona Lisa. Her plain first name outgrew her comfortable life and attached itself to one of the most recognized paintings on earth.
