Lia

Lia reaches back to Hebrew, where it grew from the same root as Leah, the name of Jacob's first wife in the Book of Genesis. Scholars often tie that root to the idea of weariness, and the short gloss handed down for it is simply "weary."

That gloss can startle a reader meeting it for the first time. A name that means "tired" looks like an odd gift. Yet the weariness in the old story belongs to a woman who endured, who bore sons and kept going. The exhaustion sits right beside a kind of stamina.
