Hana

Hana begins in Hebrew, in the name Channah, which meant grace or favor. Long before it reached Poland it had already branched into Anna and Hanna, both counted today as variants of the same old root. The sense of grace sits close to the name's start, since Channah grows from a word for kindness shown freely rather than earned.

There is a second life to consider. In Japanese, hana means flower, written with a single character, and that coincidence has given the name a bright association far from its Semitic source. A Polish girl called Hana can belong to both stories at once, one Hebrew and one entirely unrelated to it.

Diminutives soften it further. In a school register the short form Hania often turns up, while the fond Haneczka stays with family and the playground. Whatever shape it takes, the meaning it keeps is grace, łaska.
