The name Salomea comes from Hebrew, from the root that also gives shalom. In Polish its short meaning settles as pokój, peace. Its close variant is Salome, and both forms draw on that same ancient word.
Poland gave the name a saint. Salomea Piastówna, daughter of Leszek the White, was born in Kraków around 1211, and in 1245 she entered the Poor Clares at Zawichost, becoming the first Polish nun of that order. Her cult was approved in 1672, and her feast falls on 19 November, when Salomeas keep their imieniny.
Peace was never the literal sound of the Hebrew source. The sense of pokój attached itself later and stayed, until people heard it in the name without a second thought.
