Solomija

A Ukrainian name that only reached Polish records in the last decade, still rare enough that most Poles have never met one. At root it's Hebrew, from a word meaning peace.

What Solomija means

Where Solomija comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Solomija reaches Polish through Ukrainian, though its root is Hebrew. It grows from shalom, peace, the word Polish renders as pokój. The masculine Solomon shares that root. The nearest Polish relative is the variant Salomea, worn by the 13th-century Piast princess later beatified as Bł. Salomea.

The name belongs, above all, to one singer. Solomija Kruszelnicka (1872 to 1952) was a Ukrainian soprano from a Galician village near Tarnopol. In 1904 she sang the lead in a revised Madama Butterfly at Brescia, and the opera Puccini had watched fail at La Scala became a success. Abroad her name shifted to Salomea and Salomé, one voice under several spellings.

Peace sits inside the name without describing the life. Kruszelnicka toured Europe, then returned to a Lwów redrawn by borders. The meaning stayed pokój.

On a Polish class register today, Salomea turns up more often than Solomija. Both trace back to the same Hebrew peace.
