What Isabella means

Where Isabella comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Isabella began as a variation of Elizabeth, reshaped by the tongues of medieval Provence and Italy. Elizabeth comes from Hebrew Elisheva, usually read as "God is my oath." Isabella kept that meaning while dropping the opening sound, and it settled into Latin and the Romance languages as a name in its own right. English speakers borrowed it from Italian, and it has stayed close to both.

The short forms travel light. Bella and Iza can stand alone, while in Poland the variant Izabela is what shows up on an official form, and Bela turns the sound a little softer.

Isabella belonged to queens. Isabella I of Castile funded the voyage of Columbus in 1492, and several English medieval queens carried the name too. That royal history gave it a formal weight without making it cold.

Read the name in a Polish class register and you may hear both Izabela and Iza answer. The oath inside it still holds: God is my oath.
