What Ariadna means

Where Ariadna comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Ariadna comes from Greek. It is built from the intensifying prefix ari-, meaning "most", joined to hagnos, "holy" or "pure". Put the parts together and you get a literal reading: most holy. Unlike some names where a flattering sense was attached long after the fact, here the meaning sits inside the word itself.

The oldest bearer is Ariadne of Crete, daughter of King Minos. In the myth she hands Theseus a ball of thread so he can walk into the labyrinth and still find the way out. Greek writers kept her story alive, and Latin carried the name westward, where Polish later settled on the spelling Ariadna. People still say "Ariadne's thread" for whatever guides someone out of a tangle.

On a Polish class register the name stands out among the Zuzannas and Majas. In the short Polish gloss it reads najczystsza, święta, the same two ideas the Greek roots carried: most holy.
