Emili

Emili traces back to Latin, to the Roman clan name Aemilius. Scholars link that name to aemulus, a word for a rival or someone who strains to equal another. The short meaning that follows the name today, rival and industrious, grew out of that root sense of striving.

The name keeps close company. Emilia is its fuller variant, and Emil is the form given to boys. A teacher reading a class register in Poland might find an Emili and an Emilia seated a few rows apart.

In Polish the sense arrives as rywalizująca, ambitna, pracowita. Ambition and hard work became part of the picture, though the Latin origin points first to competition rather than labor. Emili is short. It ends on that Latin root, aemulus, the rival.
