What Clara means

Where Clara comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Clara descends from the Latin clarus, an adjective that meant bright and clear, and by extension famous or renowned. Both senses travel with the name. In Polish the same word is rendered as jasna, clear as daylight, and sławna, known to many.

The best-documented bearer is Saint Clare of Assisi, born Chiara in 1194, who founded the order that Poland still calls the Klaryski. Her feast falls on the eleventh of August, and that is the day a Klara marks her imieniny.

The variant Klara is the form a Polish child usually meets first, printed with a k where the international Clara keeps its c. Same root, same brightness. A teacher reading the register aloud hears both senses at once, the bright and the clear.
