What Margot means

Where Margot comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Margot began in Greek, where "margaritēs" meant pearl. It traveled into Latin as "margarita" and bloomed in France as Marguerite, the flower and the name at once. Margot is the short, worn-in French form of that longer name. The pearl sits underneath it still.

In French history the name belongs to Marguerite de Valois, the queen everyone called Margot, married to the future Henri IV in 1572. Alexandre Dumas later made her the heroine of a novel, "La Reine Margot," and the name has held a whiff of the court ever since.

The meaning is a small one. A pearl. Something that grows slowly inside a shell, formed without a chisel.

On a Polish class register the name looks foreign and clear, four letters that a teacher reads without stumbling. It has no Polish diminutive of its own, so it stays Margot on every official form at the urząd. What it keeps is the oldest thing about it, the Greek word for pearl, perła.
