Vadym

Vadym is the Ukrainian spelling of an old Slavic name. Word-watchers trace it to the root vaditi, which meant to accuse or to argue, a sense that in Polish comes close to walczyć and bronić. So the name begins somewhere near a quarrel, near the act of pressing a point.

The oldest bearer people point to is Vadym Chorobry, Vadim the Bold, a semi-legendary prince of Novgorod who is said to have led a rising against the Varangian ruler Rurik in the ninth century. Whether he lived exactly so, the chronicles argue about. Later the name found a different home in Saint Vadim of Persia, a fourth-century Christian killed for his faith. One figure fights, the other endures.

Today the name reads as thoroughly Ukrainian, and Ukrainian families in Poland carry it. A teacher reading out a class register might meet it beside Kacper and Jan. There is no standard Polish diminutive, no cross-gender twin, no softened variant on the official form at the urząd. The name stands as Vadym, close to that first meaning, to accuse, to argue.
