Thiago

Thiago reached Spanish and Portuguese through Latin. Behind it stands Iacobus, the Latin form that Spanish speakers heard inside the name Santiago, "Saint James." Over time Santiago split apart in ordinary speech: Sant Iago, then Tiago, then Thiago with an added h. The saint at the root is the apostle James, and the older meaning travels with him.

That meaning is blunt. In its Hebrew source, the name behind James points to the heel: "supplanter, holder of the heel," in Polish ten, który trzyma za piętę. The story comes from Jacob, born gripping his twin brother's heel. So a very old image of a grasping newborn sits under a name that now feels thoroughly Iberian.

Thiago belongs to the Spanish-speaking world, and to Portuguese Brazil, where it is common on a class register.

Picture a boy named Thiago on a Polish school list, filed between more familiar entries. The teacher reads it without trouble now, because football and television have carried the form far past Madrid and São Paulo. The spelling with h is the modern marker, the trace of a long road from Iacobus to the heel-holder of the grounding.
