Svietlana grows from the Slavic root svet, meaning light. The Polish gloss holds to that: jasna, świetlista. For centuries the name barely surfaced in records. It spread after Vasily Zhukovsky published his ballad Svetlana in 1813, and readers gave their daughters the heroine's name.
The name reads as Russian to most ears, and its most documented bearer confirms that. Svetlana Alliluyeva, daughter of Joseph Stalin, was born in 1926 and defected to the United States in 1967. Her life carried the name far past the ballad that made it common.
Polish spelling softens it. The variant swietłana takes the Polish ł, and the short form sweta does the daily work. On a school register you might find both. The root still means light.
