The Arabic tradition settles on the morning star, the bright point before dawn. The 86th surah of the Quran opens on it, At-Tariq, and glosses the word as a piercing light before sunrise.
The morning star comes before the sun. The best known bearer of the name is Tariq ibn Ziyad, the commander who crossed into the Iberian Peninsula in 711. The rock where he landed took his name, Jabal Tariq, meaning Tariq's mountain. Later European tongues turned that into Gibraltar.
