Zoya

Zoya comes to Polish ears from the Slavic east, familiar in Russian and Ukrainian households. Its meaning is direct: life, or życie in Polish. The word shares a root with Greek Zoe, a name early Christians gave to daughters as a promise of the life to come, and the sense traveled with the faith.

In Poland the name arrives with a cousin. The variant Zoja bends the spelling to Polish habits, the j standing in for a y that Polish rarely keeps inside a name. On a class register in Kraków, a Zoja and a Zoya might sit two rows apart, the same name wearing two coats.

Life is a large thing to hand a child. Zoya says it plainly. There is a saint behind it too, Zoe of Rome, remembered as a martyr of the early Church, so the name brings a name-day along with its meaning. Short, open, ending on a bright vowel, it asks little of the tongue. Życie: that is what a Zoya answers to.
