Zakhar

Zakhar comes from the Hebrew Zekharyah, which reads as "God remembers." The same root named the prophet Zechariah, and in Polish the sense stays plain: bóg pamięta. The name traveled east rather than west, settling into Russian and Ukrainian speech, where Zakhar became an ordinary given name long before it reached any baby-name list.

Readers of Russian literature meet a Zakhar early. In Goncharov's novel Oblomov, Zakhar is the aging, grumbling servant who cannot picture life away from his master. That character is loyal and worn, and the name has kept a working, deep-rooted feel in the cultures that use it.

There are no diminutives to soften it. Zakhar stands as it is.

For a Polish family the name arrives with one clear meaning behind it: God remembers. On a name-day, or on a form at the urząd, it looks brief and slightly foreign, three syllables ending hard. What it holds is that old Hebrew promise, bóg pamięta.
