Yelyzaveta

Yelyzaveta is the Ukrainian form of a Hebrew name, Elisheva, which meant "God is my oath." The oath sits inside the older word: el, God, joined to sheva, the same root that gives the Hebrew verb for swearing. Ukrainian speakers reshaped the sounds until they reached Yelyzaveta, four syllables that open wide.

The name arrived through the Bible before it settled in Kyiv. Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, carried it into Christian use, and from Greek and Church Slavonic liturgy it spread across the East Slavic lands. On a class register in a Polish school today, a girl might appear as Yelyzaveta and answer to Liza among friends.

The same root shows up on the map. Yelysavethrad, now Kropyvnytskyi, was named in the eighteenth century after a fortress dedicated to Saint Elizabeth. So the name belongs to a city as well as to people.

The meaning stays close to the surface. God is my oath, the sense still attached to every girl called Yelyzaveta.
