Xawery
A Latin name meaning "new house", and a rarer spin on Ksawery: most Poles have never met one. It stays entirely a boys' name, and fewer parents reach for it now than a decade ago.
Xawery Pronunciation
What Xawery means
Where Xawery comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Xawery reached Polish through a Latinized surname, and its short meaning, "new house" or nowy dom, points back to a village in Navarre. That village gave Saint Francis Xavier, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary, the name the world remembers him by. So "new house" is not a Polish root at all, only a sense fixed to the old place name. Latin spread it; the saint made it a given name across Catholic Europe.
In Poland it settled beside its fuller spelling, Ksawery, and grew a feminine form, Ksawera. Both were common among the gentry in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The sculptor Xawery Dunikowski, who survived Auschwitz and worked almost to the end of a long life, kept the shorter spelling in public view through the twentieth century.
A boy named Ksawery shares his name day with the saint each December, marked on the third. Read from a school register, the name runs to three syllables that a teacher learns fast.
The meaning stays modest under all of it. Nowy dom, new house.
