Walenty

From the Latin for "strong, healthy". A rare name now, one most Poles have never met, though it's quietly picking up: more boys got it last year than in years past, and it goes only to boys.

Meaning & Origin

What Walenty means

Where Walenty comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Walenty comes from the Latin valens, the present participle of valere, a verb that meant to be strong and to be in good health. So the name says something plain about the body: strong, healthy. The Romans carried it as Valentinus, and from that root Polish kept Walenty while other languages held onto Valentin, the variant you still meet across the border in Czech and German registers.

The name arrived with the church calendar. Saint Valentine gives Poland its imieniny on the fourteenth of February, a name-day much older than the greeting cards that now crowd it. In Polish folk tradition he was a patron of the sick, invoked against epilepsy, which was long called choroba świętego Walentego.

For centuries a boy called Walenty had a feminine counterpart in Walentyna, the same Latin strength turned toward a woman's name. Read a school register from a Polish village and Walenty sits among the older saints' names, less common now than it once was. What it says has not changed since Rome: valens, strong and healthy.
