Veronika comes from Greek. The older form is Berenike, and behind that stands Pherenike, built from "pherein," to bring, and "nike," victory. So the name means "bringing victory." In Poland it more often appears as Weronika, with Wera as the everyday short form.
The victory belonged first to the ancient world. Berenike was a name for Macedonian and Egyptian queens, among them Berenike II, whose braid of hair was set among the stars as a constellation. Only later did the sound of the name drift toward the Latin phrase "vera icon," true image, a reading that fastened itself to Saint Veronica. That association came second. The Greek sense of victory came first.
