Timur

The name Timur comes from the Turkic word temür, which means iron. It spread with the Turkic peoples across Central Asia and eventually settled into Turkish usage, where it still turns up on class registers today. The meaning stayed close to metal. Whatever softness a parent might hear in the two syllables, the root points to something hard and worked.

Its most famous bearer makes the point plainly. Timur, the fourteenth-century ruler that Europe came to call Tamerlane, built an empire out of Samarkand and left a dynasty, the Timurids, whose patronage of astronomy and architecture outlasted his campaigns. His name announced iron before he ever earned the reputation.

There are no common Polish diminutives or feminine forms for it. In Poland the name reads as clearly foreign, a marker of Turkish or Central Asian roots rather than a Slavic one. A child named Timur on a Polish urząd form carries a Turkic word for a metal, unaltered and easy to trace. The short gloss offered on a Polish site, żelazo, sits right on top of that ancient temür, iron then and iron now.
