Stanley

Stanley began as a place before it became a person. It comes from the Old English words stān, meaning stone, and lēah, a clearing or meadow in the woods. Put together they describe a stony meadow, a kamienista łąka, land a farmer would know by its rocks. English families carried it first as a surname tied to such ground, and only later did it move to the front of the name.

The Germanic root sits right on the surface. Stone is a word English shares with German Stein and Dutch steen, all drawn from the same old stock. That plainness suited the name. One well documented bearer is Henry Morton Stanley, the Welsh-born explorer of the nineteenth century, whose adopted surname became known across the world.

For a Polish family the name looks foreign yet legible. It is not a form of Stanisław, despite the shared opening sound, since the two grow from entirely different roots. On a school register in Warsaw a Stanley stands out. What he carries is older than any borough: a stone clearing, a polana among the rocks.
